Tired on the Fourth of July

07/04/2005 - 8:30 PM

The Fourth of July has never really rated too high in my mind as far as holidays go. As far as symbolism, it's wonderful. The fact that people who were persecuted for their faith traveled to a (supposedly) uninhabited land to settle and be themselves is admirable, as is them standing up for themselves and freeing themselves from an oppresive mother land. But my connections to the holiday always go toward the heat and the chaos of activities. Somehow, I am able to disconnect the fireworks from everything else, and that's become it's own event. I would assume that's because you don't just see fireworks on the Fourth.

(Cute aside...at church yesterday, the sound system was having issues, and someone was trying to fix it as we sang "The Battle Hymn of the Republic". As he was working on it, it kept popping, and after a few pops, it really sounded like fireworks going off in the middle of the song. I think the last pop was intended, but what do I know?)

It's been a relatively relaxed weekend, even though we've stayed somewhat busy. The trip up to Vail didn't go off as we'd hoped (too much drama with who was going and when), so we stayed home and laid low. Saturday night we drove down to Castle Rock (about an hour south of where we live) to hang with my insurance agent and a few friends of his. We had a good time, but there was some drama with one of the guy's dad being in rough shape, and the party kind of broke up earlier than expected. We had some good mudslides, though. Highlight of the night...watching my agent drink himself into oblivion with mudslides, and seeing one slide down his nice white shirt.

Sunday was church, and then the office for a couple of hours, and then Matt and I went to an Indian restaurant for dinner. The food's good, but the service is lousy. You just don't get a really good vibe from the place, so we may just do take-out going forward. There's an amazing restaurant we go to down in Aurora, but since that's about 45 minutes away, we usually have to either have a special occasion, or be in that neck of the woods.

Today's definitely been the best day of the three. Matt and I spent the whole day together, starting this morning at the Original Pancake House. From there, we went to go see War of the Worlds (I wasn't impressed, but it's not horrible), and then stopped home for a bit. We had a few errands to run, but first we went to a nearby lake and did a lap around it (still felt the need to walk off breakfast...we didn't eat lunch, if that tells you how big it was). A trip to the mall ended quickly, as we discovered that Crate and Barrel can make their own hours apart from the mall. The mall had a Container Store knockoff that was closing, so we stopped in there for a few minutes, and I got cruised by some guy in his 50s that was grabbing himself inappropriately. Not a pretty visual.

So here we are now, just chilling and occasionally watching fireworks out the window. Matt's working on ceremony stuff, and I'm getting sucked in from time to time. 19 days and counting...
