Am I On the Guest List?

07/12/2005 - 7:46 AM

Folks, if you ever have the opportunity to have a large, formal wedding/commitment ceremony...

RUN. RUN LIKE YOU'VE NEVER RUN BEFORE

Actually, as a whole, it hasn't been so bad, but there have been moments that have truly tested Matt and I. Public Enemy Number One, though, has been "the guest who doesn't want to come alone". Matt and I made a decision early on that we want to know everyone at our ceremony, and while that may not be 100% possible, we thought it would be easier to enforce. But NOOOOOO...it seems to not matter that it's OUR day. People have to be comfortable and are more concerned about THEIR familiarity with people than ours. Here's a few examples:

-One friend sent back the card that said "and guest". He's been very supportive, and actually gave a gift that was truly impressive, plus was willing to pay for the guest, so we agreed. As of yesterday, he still hadn't been able to make up his mind, but he decided to go with a boy he met for the first time three nights ago. Ugh! And to top it off, when I asked him for the boy's last name, he didn't even know it.

-A co-worker who originally wasn't going to come because she had a reunion to go to changed her mind, which was fine (although the fact she threw in that the three people she wanted to see most at the reunion weren't going to be there didn't make me feel all warm and fuzzy). However, we get a phone call Friday night (please remember that the RSVP's were due on the 1st) from a drunken friend, asking if this co-worker could bring a date. Uhhhh...no.

But then it started to set in that the friends who called for her are providing the photography for the ceremony, with our only costing being the paper and toners to print photos, and they also gave us a weekend getaway for next month that was more than generous. So Matt's conscience got the best of him, and we are allowing the date.

-The winner, however, for best guest drama, came about by accident. Seems a friend of Matt's old roommate whom we invited was planning on bringing a date, but we didn't know about it. Actually, we didn't even get a response card from him, and had to find out second-hand if he was even coming. Anyway, the date fell through, so this guy invites a guy I work with, and I just happened to run into the friend yesterday. We had faxed the list of names to the restaurant for the menus, and I drew the line. But do you believe that? Iron cast balls, I tell ya...

Okay...rant complete. I just needed to document all that for posterity. On a completely different note, here's my fun for the day...
